Certificate in Integrative Counselling Skills
This is a part-time course, run for 3.5 hours per week for a year.
This course also incorporates a residential weekend.
Students will need to have successfully completed the 10 week introductory course or its equivalent.
This course is suitable for those who use active listening skills as part of their roles, and those who are considering becoming qualified counsellors.
Aims
To develop a good basic understanding and repertoire of counselling skills.
To underpin these skills with a broad understanding of counselling theory.
To develop increased self-awareness and understanding of group dynamics.
Outcomes
By the end of the course candidates should be able to:
- Use competently and effectively a range of counselling skills.
- Initiate a counselling session.
- End appropriately a session and a number of sessions. Carry out a basic assessment.
- Make appropriate referrals
Entry requirements
Candidates will be expected to have completed a 10-week introduction to counselling course or its equivalent, to the satisfaction of the course tutors.
Students are expected to take responsibility for their own learning, and will be advised at interview of the amount of extra study time recommended i.e. 50 – 60 hours over the year.
It is a compulsory element of the course that a residential weekend be included.
Students will be advised at interview of the experiential nature of the course, and appropriate levels of self-disclosure will be encouraged.
The fee for the Certificate in Counselling Skills

Course Units
UNIT 1 Creating a Counselling Skills Professional Framework.
Understanding key legal and ethical issues with reference to the BACP Framework.
Counselling within a multicultural and diverse society.
The difference between a professional counsellor and a person using counselling skills.
Supervision. Environment – safety aspects.
ASSESSMENT 1500 – 2000 word essay. Internal moderation and assessment.
UNIT 2 An introduction to Counselling Theory.
Have a theoretical and conceptual underpinning to counselling skills work with clients, based on basic understanding and knowledge of the historical development, philosophy and key principles of person-centred counselling.
Demonstrate a good basic understanding of integrative theory.
Demonstrate a basic understanding of psychodynamic theory and cognitive behavioural therapy.
Compare and contrast theories.
Be aware of the holistic nature of the person, including cultural, spiritual values and beliefs.
ASSESSMENT 1500 – 2000 word essay. Internal moderation and assessment.
Unit 3 Basic Counselling Skills
Use a wide range of counselling skills including:
Attentiveness and rapport building
Active Listening
Managing silence
Paraphrasing and summarising
Reflecting
Focusing and challenging
Checking understanding with client
Initiate a counselling skills interaction, paying particular attention to the contract.
End session.
Manage subsequent sessions.
End a series of sessions.
Recognise, celebrate and work with differences stemming from cultural diversity.
ASSESSMENT Tape of 20-30 minutes counselling session. Essay 1500 – 2000 words. External moderation and assessment.
UNIT 4 Personal development Evidence and own personal growth and increased self-awareness.
Demonstrate the impact of the dynamics and processes of the learning group on their continued learning about self and about self in interaction with others.
Evaluate strengths and weaknesses and create a personal development plan.
ASSESSMENT 1500 – 2000 word essay. Internal moderation and assessment.
